Subjective expected utility theory with costly actions
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper explores alternative axiomatizations of subjective expected utility theory for decision makers with direct preferences over actions; including a general subjective expected utility representation with actiondependent utility, and separately additive representations. In the context of the state-space formulation of agency theory the results of this paper constitute axiomatic foundations of the agent’s behavior.

A theory of Bayesian decision making with action-dependent subjective probabilities
This paper presents a complete, choice-based, axiomatic Bayesian decision theory. It introduces a new choice set consisting of information-contingent plans for choosing actions and bets and subjective expected utility model with effectdependent utility functions and action-dependent subjective probabilities which, in conjunction with the updating of the probabilities using Bayes’ rule, gives ri...
متن کاملChoosing the Optimum Underground Mine Layout with Regard to Metal Price Uncertainty Using Expected Utility Theory
Metal price is one of the most important parameters in the calculation of cut- off grade. The cut- off grade has the main role in determination of mine layout. Mine layout actuates mineable reserve, mine life and economic profitability. Not considering the uncertainty in metal prices can lead to a non-optimal layout. In this paper optimum underground mine layout is determined by expected utilit...
متن کاملTestable implications of subjective expected utility theory
I show that the predictive content of the hypothesis of subjective expected utility maximization critically depends on what the analyst knows about the details of the problem a particular decision maker faces. When the analyst does not know anything about the agent’s payoffs or beliefs and can only observe the sequence of actions taken by the decision maker any arbitrary sequence of actions can...
متن کاملA Unique Costly Contemplation Representation∗
We extend the costly contemplation model to preferences over sets of lotteries, assuming that the state-dependent utilities are von Neumann-Morgenstern. The contemplation costs are uniquely pinned down in a reduced form representation, where the decision-maker selects a subjective measure over expected utility functions instead of a subjective signal over a subjective state space. We show that ...
